Laminotomy/Discectomy

A surgical procedure to remove a small portion of lamina to remove a herniated disc that is causing back pain and/or leg pain, numbness or muscle weakness. When an intervertebral disc ruptures in the spine, it puts pressure on one or more nerve roots (often called nerve root compression). This causes pain and other symptoms in the neck, arms, back and legs.

Laminectomy

A surgical procedure to remove the lamina, the back part (or “roof”) of the vertebra that covers your spinal canal. By removing the lamina, the procedure increases the space for your spinal canal and relieves pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerves. While a Laminectomy is the complete removal of the lamina, a Laminotomy involves only partial removal.
